This publication is about the changing social belief system of New England during a period of 100 years. Rural New Englanders embraced the material culture as the urbanites before them had. Houses, fashion, interior decoration, art, handmade furniture, dinnerware, silverware, clocks and watches, handmade embroideries and much more showed a desire for refinement. The author tells the story as if it were (and perhaps it was) a stage play replete with a cast, a plot, a stage and scenery, props, a rehearsal and the opening of the play itself.
